Shoes on the Danube Bank

"Shoes on the Danube Bank" a memorial for the murder of almost 20,000 jews on the bank of the river Danube, Budapest, Hungary. Between December 1944 to January 1945 20,000 jews were taken from the Budapest Ghetto, and executed at bank of this river.

The memorial was connived by Hungarian film director Can Togay and sculpted by Gyula Paper on 16th April 2005.

The victims were asked to remove their shoes before being shot, as shoes were a valuable asset during the Second World War and could be traded or resold by the militia. The memorial represents the shoes left behind. The monument consists of 60 iron shoes, sculpted in perfect detail and size.

Locals and tourists alike come here and often leave behind flowers and candles to honour the deceased.
